Lat Pulldown (Cable)

With the lat pulldown you pull a bar from above to the front of your chest. Your back muscles perform the pulling movement, while your arms provide support.

Also known as: Lat Pulldown (Cable).

Cable lat pulldown.

How to perform this exercise

  1. Set the thigh restraint and take an overhand pulldown grip just outside shoulder width.
  2. Draw the elbows down toward the sides and bring the handle in front toward the upper chest within the machine range; do not pull behind the neck.
  3. Let the arms return overhead slowly without bouncing upward or swinging the torso.

What are you paying attention to?

Adjust the thigh support so that you remain firmly seated. Pull your elbows down along your torso and then let the bar rise back up in a controlled manner. Keep your torso in approximately the same position throughout the repetition.

Common mistakes

  • Don't use a big swing back to get the bar down.
  • Pull toward the front of your body. Stop when the elbows do not move further down without changing the position.

Variants and your logbook

A different handle changes the performance; register it as your own variant. With a seated row you pull horizontally instead of from above. That is a complement, not an identical movement.
