Romanian Deadlift (Barbell)

The Romanian deadlift starts upright, with the bar in front of your thighs. The movement revolves around bringing your hips back and mainly taxes your hamstrings and glutes.

Also known as: Romanian Deadlift (Barbell).

Hip hinge movement.

How to perform this exercise

  1. Stand upright holding a barbell in front of the thighs with slightly bent knees.
  2. Push the hips backward and hinge from the hips with a neutral spine. Stop before you need to round the back.
  3. Bring the hips forward to stand without leaning backward at the top.

What are you paying attention to?

Keep your knees slightly bent and the bar close to your legs. Move your hips back as your torso tilts forward. From that position, return to an upright position without leaning back at the top.

Common mistakes

  • Do not make it a deep squat: the knees remain slightly bent while mainly the hips move.
  • The bar does not have to touch the floor. Stop the descent where you can still maintain back position and tension.

Variants and your logbook

Start with a light bar to learn the hip hinge. A squat puts a different emphasis and does not replace this movement one on one. Make a note of the version you use with your working sets.
